CELL PHONES

Cell phones have not been a positive influence for many of our students and study after study is showing how phones can cause greater anxiety and distraction for both students and adults.  In schools, cell phones have been the cause of huge amounts of distraction and disruption and interruption.  Not always, but enough that we feel it's important to step in and ask everyone to step away from phone use while in the building.

The rule at Roseway Heights is that phones
are off
and put away
when students walk into the building
until they leave the building.

Ear buds are also put away, out of sight.
(Not hanging around the neck or dangling from pockets)

If students need to contact parents or vice versa, please
 (for safety reasons)
go through the office.

I try to be really flexible with the kids.  We forget.  We don't turn them off right.  Someone calls and it goes off.  I get it.

I start off with gentle, but clear reminders and suggestions for what to do.

If a student's phone is a constant distraction or disruption (three times or more in my class), students will be asked to check in their phones in the office or possibly have parents come pick up phones so that we can meet to discuss responsible phone use and behavior.

PLEASE HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR STUDENT ABOUT RESPONSIBLE PHONE USE AND CARE IN SCHOOL.
